About this event

Cause

The 9K Per Day Challenge raises awareness and funds for mental health services across Australia. In 2022, 3,249 Australians died by suicide—an average of 9 deaths per day. Each of these numbers represents a life lost, along with families, friends, and entire communities grieving that loss. Run For Mental Health Ltd created this challenge to honour those lives and drive meaningful change by supporting community-based mental health services and prevention programs. The organisation is dedicated to empowering people to thrive through optimal physical and mental health, with a focus on combating depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses. By taking part in the 9K Per Day Challenge, you're directly contributing to this vital mission and helping build a mentally healthier Australia.

What to Expect

The 9K Per Day Challenge is a 30-day virtual fitness event running from September 1 to November 30, 2026. During this period, participants commit to moving 9,000 steps or 9 kilometres per day. The beauty of this challenge is its flexibility—you're not required to complete all steps in a single run or walk. Instead, you can break your daily target into multiple activities throughout the day, whether that's a morning walk, lunchtime run, or evening stroll. On days when you don't reach your 9,000 steps, you can make up the distance later in the week or spread it across the remaining challenge period. This approach makes the challenge accessible to people of all fitness levels, from seasoned runners to those just starting their fitness journey. You can participate as an individual, setting personal goals and tracking your progress, or join forces with friends, family, or colleagues by creating or joining a team. Team participation adds a social dimension, providing motivation, accountability, and the opportunity to fundraise collectively for mental health services.

How to Participate

  • Sign Up: Visit the event website and click 'SIGN UP' to register for free. You'll create your personal fundraising page, which you can customise and share with your network.
  • Set Your Goal: Commit to 9,000 steps per day or, if you're looking for a tougher challenge, 9 kilometres per day.
  • Share Your Page: Tell your friends, family, and colleagues about your challenge and encourage them to sponsor your effort. Your fundraising page makes it easy for supporters to donate and track your progress.
  • Start Moving: Begin your 30-day journey at your own pace. Track your daily steps using your smartphone, fitness tracker, or any method that works for you. Log your progress on your fundraising page.
  • Stay Flexible: Remember, you can split your daily steps across multiple activities. If you have an off day, simply make up the steps later in the week.
  • Complete the Challenge: Finish your 30-day commitment and celebrate your achievement alongside your community.

Cost

Entry to the 9K Per Day Challenge is completely free for all participants. There is no registration fee to join the challenge and begin tracking your steps. However, participants are encouraged to fundraise through their personal challenge pages to support Run For Mental Health's mission. Every donation made through your fundraising page directly supports community-based mental health services, prevention programs, and initiatives that save lives and improve mental wellbeing across Australia.

Milestone Rewards

As you progress through the 9K Per Day Challenge, you'll have the opportunity to earn digital badges and recognition for achieving key milestones. These badges celebrate your commitment and provide motivation as you work toward completing the full 30-day challenge. Whether you're participating as an individual or as part of a team, your achievement contributes to a larger movement supporting mental health awareness and action in Australia. Upon completing the challenge, you'll join thousands of other Australians who are taking a stand for mental health, one step at a time.
