About this event

Cause

Do it for Duchenne is a national awareness and fundraising campaign led by Duchenne Australia. It invites people across the country to help make the invisible weight of Duchenne muscular dystrophy visible, while raising funds for people living with the condition and their families. The campaign is built around solidarity: participants carry a small physical weight as a symbol of the much greater physical and emotional load carried by the Duchenne community every day.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a rare, progressive and life-limiting muscle-wasting condition that primarily affects boys. Muscle weakness increases over time and can affect mobility, independence, heart and lung health. Its impact also extends to mental health, relationships, education, work and family life. Although there is currently no cure, timely care, practical support and strong community connections can improve quality of life.

Funds raised through the challenge support Duchenne Australia's work for Australians living with Duchenne and associated dystrophinopathies. This includes advocacy for evidence-based care and access to emerging therapies, support for research and clinical trials, and services that prioritise mental health, peer connection and meaningful outcomes for families.

What to Expect

The official challenge runs for 79 hours, beginning at 9:00 am on Friday 4 September 2026 and finishing at 4:00 pm on Monday 7 September 2026, World Duchenne Day. The number 79 represents the 79 exons in the dystrophin gene, while World Duchenne Day is observed annually on the seventh day of the ninth month.

During the campaign, participants are encouraged to wear red wrist or ankle weights as a visible gesture of empathy, strength and action. People may wear the official one-kilogram campaign weights, use weights they already own, choose red fitness bands or ribbons, or take part by walking in solidarity. The campaign is not a competition and is not intended to test fitness. Its purpose is to start conversations, raise awareness and help lighten the load for families affected by Duchenne.

The challenge is virtual and nationwide, so participants can join from home, work, school or their local community. Individuals can fundraise independently, join an existing team or register as a team leader and invite others. Workplaces, gyms, schools, sporting clubs, families and friendship groups can all take part together, even when members are in different locations.

Participants should listen to their bodies and choose an approach that is safe and manageable. Weights do not need to be worn continuously. Options include starting with short sessions, alternating between wrists and ankles and taking regular breaks. Anyone who cannot or does not wish to wear weights can still participate by displaying red ribbons, setting a personal walking goal, sharing campaign information, donating or fundraising for the cause.

How to Participate

  1. Use the registration link on this event page and sign up as an individual, team member or team leader.
  2. Create and personalise your fundraising page, then set a target that feels achievable.
  3. Invite friends, family, colleagues or community members to support your campaign or join your team.
  4. Choose how you will represent the weight of Duchenne, using wrist or ankle weights, red bands, ribbons, walking or another accessible act of solidarity.
  5. Prepare for the official start at 9:00 am on 4 September and decide when you will wear the weight or complete your chosen activity.
  6. Share your progress and the meaning behind the 79-hour campaign to help more people understand Duchenne.
  7. Complete the challenge by 4:00 pm on World Duchenne Day, 7 September, and thank the people who supported your fundraising.

Cost

Registration is free. Participants are encouraged to raise funds, but the focus is on awareness and participation, and people can adapt the challenge to suit their circumstances. No special equipment is required because existing wrist or ankle weights, red fitness bands or ribbons can be used.

An optional self-donation of $35 or more may qualify eligible participants for a set of campaign wrist weights. This reward is limited in quantity and subject to availability, so registration does not guarantee a physical kit.

Milestone Rewards

Eligible participants who make a self-donation of at least $35 can receive a set of two one-kilogram red Do it for Duchenne wrist or ankle weights. This offer is limited to the first 200 eligible participants and is subject to availability.

Participants who raise $500 or more can earn an exclusive campaign hat. This reward is limited to the first 50 eligible fundraisers and is also subject to availability.

Everyone who registers receives tools to support their campaign, including a personal fundraising page, social media templates and daily post ideas, along with guidance for wearing weights safely and effectively. The most important reward is the awareness created and the practical support made possible for Australians living with Duchenne and their families.
