About this event

Cause

Go The Distance is a community fundraising challenge supporting people impacted by cancer through Chris O'Brien Lifehouse. Every kilometre completed and every dollar raised helps make cancer care more accessible for patients and their families. Chris O'Brien Lifehouse is an independent, not-for-profit comprehensive cancer hospital in New South Wales. It brings treatment, research, supportive care and specialist services together under one roof, helping people navigate cancer with coordinated expert support.

Funds raised through the challenge help support world-class treatment, groundbreaking research and compassionate care. Participants can make a practical contribution by choosing a movement goal, sharing their challenge and inviting friends, relatives and colleagues to donate. The campaign is designed to show that individual efforts add up: every walk, run, roll or swim can help create better outcomes for people affected by cancer.

What to Expect

Go The Distance is a flexible 30-day virtual challenge held throughout September 2026. Participants choose a distance that feels meaningful and achievable, then work towards it during the month. You can walk, run, roll, swim or move in another way that suits your interests, mobility and fitness level. Because the event is virtual, you can take part from your neighbourhood, a local park, a pool, a treadmill or any accessible location across Australia.

Your goal is personal. You might commit to a daily walk, build towards a running target, complete regular swimming sessions or combine several activities. The flexible format makes the challenge suitable for beginners, experienced athletes, families, workplaces and community teams. You can participate alone while receiving online encouragement, or invite others to join you and make September a shared activity goal.

Fundraising is an important part of the experience. After registering, participants can share their fundraising page with friends and family, explain why they are taking part and ask their community for support. Progress across the month creates natural opportunities to post updates, celebrate milestones and remind supporters that every donation contributes to cancer care.

How to Participate

  1. Register for free through the official Go The Distance 2026 registration page and create your participant profile.
  2. Choose how you want to move. Walking, running, rolling and swimming are all welcomed, and you can adapt the challenge to your own abilities.
  3. Select a distance goal for September. Pick a target that is motivating, realistic and appropriate for your health and experience.
  4. Set a fundraising goal and share your page with friends, family, colleagues and your wider community.
  5. Complete and track your kilometres between 1 September and 30 September 2026, sharing progress and celebrating each milestone along the way.

Before beginning a new exercise routine, choose an activity and pace appropriate for your circumstances. Participants managing an injury, disability or health condition may wish to seek relevant professional advice and adapt their goal as needed.

Cost

Registration for Go The Distance 2026 is free. There is no entry fee to create a challenge and begin fundraising. Participants are encouraged to set a fundraising target and invite donations, but fundraising contributions support the cause rather than purchasing event entry. Donations of $2 or more to the Trustee for Lifehouse Australia Trust, trading as Chris O'Brien Lifehouse, are stated by the organiser to be tax deductible in Australia.

Milestone Rewards

The challenge includes rewards that recognise fundraising progress and celebrate participant impact. Register and raise $50 before 1 September to qualify for the advertised Early Bird Pack, featuring socks and a tote. Additional Go The Distance merchandise may be unlocked as participants reach fundraising milestones, subject to the organiser's reward conditions, availability and eligibility rules.

The official campaign information also promotes milestone rewards for higher fundraising achievements. Participants should check their registration dashboard and the current rewards program for full details, including any limits, deadlines or fulfilment requirements. Rewards add some fun to the month, but the central achievement is helping Chris O'Brien Lifehouse provide treatment, research and expert care for people impacted by cancer.
