About this event
Cause
Out of the Shadows Walk is a tribute to World Suicide Prevention Day (September 10), dedicated to remembering those we've lost to suicide and supporting Australians in crisis. Over 3,000 Australians lose their lives to suicide every year—our family, friends, and loved ones. Through this walk, we raise awareness, overcome stigma, and commit to suicide prevention. The funds raised support Lifeline, Australia's leading suicide prevention service, which receives over 1 million contacts from people in crisis each year. Every 24 seconds, someone in Australia calls the crisis support line seeking help.
What to Expect
Out of the Shadows Walk is a 9km virtual challenge that invites Australians to walk anywhere—your local park, suburb, or region—on World Suicide Prevention Day. You walk at your own pace and location, connecting with a nationwide community united in remembrance and hope. The event combines individual reflection with collective action: you walk for those lost, support those in crisis, and stand in solidarity with Australians facing their darkest moments.
How to Participate
- Sign up at outoftheshadowswalk.org.au and pledge to walk 9km on September 10
- Walk anywhere—at your own pace, in your community, or with friends and family
- Share your walk to inspire others and support Lifeline's crisis services
- Help change lives for Australians experiencing emotional distress or mental illness
Cost
Entry is free for all participants. While the walk itself is free, donations to Lifeline's suicide prevention services are welcome and go directly to supporting Australians in crisis.
Milestone Rewards
Participants who complete the 9km challenge earn recognition as part of a nationwide movement for suicide prevention. Your walk sends a powerful message of hope and connection, ensuring no one has to face their darkest moments alone. Together, we create change through compassion and solidarity.
