About this event
The Simpson Desert Ultra is a tough outback ultra marathon held near Birdsville in south-west Queensland, on the edge of the Simpson Desert. It offers multiple race distances, including 160km, 100km, 75km, 50km and 25km, making it suitable for both first-time ultra runners and experienced endurance athletes.
Set in one of Australia’s most remote and striking landscapes, the event takes runners across a mix of terrain, from towering sand dunes to rocky gibber plains. The course is designed to challenge participants physically while showcasing the vast scale and stark beauty of the Australian outback.
The 2027 event is scheduled for 4–6 June 2027, with the main race day listed as Saturday, 5 June 2027. It is described as one of Australia’s toughest ultra marathons and is known for its big heart, open spaces and unique desert setting.
