Move For Life: How Midlife Activity Shapes Your Later Years!

The study, used data from Australian Longitudinal Study on Women’s Health (ALSWH), with data from over 11,000 Australian women born between 1946 and 1951 for 15 years, from 1998 to 2019. The researchers aimed to understand how different patterns of physical activity throughout midlife could affect health-related quality of life, specifically focusing on the physical health domain.

Using a method called target trial emulation, which mimics a randomised controlled trial, the researchers compared two interventions: consistently meeting the World Health Organization's physical activity guidelines over the 15-year period and starting to meet the guidelines at ages 55, 60, or 65. They compared these interventions against a control group that did not meet the guidelines throughout the study period.

The Findings: What They Discovered

The results were striking. Women who consistently adhered to the physical activity guidelines throughout midlife reported better physical health-related quality of life compared to those who did not adhere. Similarly, those who started to meet the guidelines at age 55 or earlier also showed significant improvements in physical health-related quality of life.
