About this event
The Coogee Island Challenge (Spring) is a popular ocean swim held at Coogee Beach in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, and is billed as the unofficial start to the city’s summer of ocean swimming. It brings together first-time ocean swimmers, regular competitors and the local community for a morning in the water off one of Sydney’s best-known beaches.
The event features 800m, 1km and 2.4km swim options, with the headline course circling Wedding Cake Island. The shorter swims remain within Coogee Bay, making the event accessible for swimmers looking for a gentler challenge or a shorter distance.
Participant safety is a major focus, with a large team of qualified surf lifesavers, water safety personnel, course officials and first aid support across the event. The swim is hosted by Coogee Surf Life Saving Club, and is known for its strong community atmosphere and iconic coastal setting.
For 2026, the 800m option includes a separate Community Swim for participants aged 13 years and over, alongside the Junior Dash. The event is scheduled for Sunday 29 November 2026.
