About this event
The Cronulla Shark Island Swim is one of Australia’s original ocean swimming events, having been held since 1988. Set against the coastline of Cronulla in southern Sydney, the event combines challenging open-water racing with a welcoming beachside festival atmosphere.
The feature event is a 2.3-kilometre swim around Shark Island, south of Cronulla Beach. Swimmers follow a course around the island before returning to shore, with the open-water setting providing a memorable challenge for experienced competitors and recreational swimmers alike.
A 1-kilometre Cronulla Beach swim is also offered for families, newer open-water swimmers and those seeking a shorter challenge. The event includes wave starts across age groups, while an elite wave is available for eligible swimmers competing for outright honours.
Race-day activities are centred around Cronulla Park and Cronulla Beach, creating a lively festival environment for swimmers, supporters and spectators. Timing bands are collected before each swim, with the shorter event scheduled for the morning ahead of the Shark Island course.
Whether taking on the full island swim or enjoying the shorter beach course, participants can expect a coastal community event that celebrates ocean swimming, fitness and the atmosphere of Cronulla’s iconic beachfront.
