About this event
Goondiwindi Hell of the West Weekend returns to Goondiwindi for its 37th year in 2027, bringing a full weekend of endurance sport, family participation and country hospitality to the Queensland–New South Wales border region.
The weekend’s feature event is the Hell of the West Triathlon, a long-course challenge comprising a 2-kilometre swim in the Macintyre River, an 80-kilometre cycle along the Barwon Highway and Goodar Road, and a 20-kilometre run beside the picturesque river. Known for its flat course and demanding summer conditions, the event attracts experienced athletes, first-time long-course competitors, Ironman hopefuls and relay teams.
An AquaBike event is also part of the Sunday program, using the same swim and cycle course while omitting the run. It offers another way for endurance athletes to take part in the weekend’s signature challenge.
Saturday’s Super Saturday program provides accessible options for a wide range of ages and abilities. Events include the Hell Kids Triathlon, Firestarter Triathlon and 5-kilometre and 10-kilometre Inferno Charity Runs, creating opportunities for children, families, recreational participants and competitive athletes to join the festivities.
Established in 1989 by local triathlon enthusiasts, the event is now facilitated by the Goondiwindi Triathlon Club as a not-for-profit community event. Its welcoming atmosphere, strong volunteer support and generous country spirit are central to the Hell of the West experience, with the weekend bringing together participants, supporters and local community groups.
