About the Event
The Lifecare Run Well Series is a free educational program hosted by Lifecare Malvern Sports Medicine, created to help everyday runners prepare properly for the Melbourne Marathon. Night 5 of the series, Race Day Confidence & Course Insights, focuses on the part of marathon training that often gets overlooked: what actually happens on race day itself. Even runners who have trained diligently for months can come unstuck without a clear plan for pacing, nutrition, and managing the course. This session is led by an experienced Melbourne Marathon pacer who has run the course many times and understands exactly where runners tend to struggle and where they can stay composed.
This is the fifth of six sessions in the series, each building toward race-day readiness for participants tackling the Melbourne Marathon. Whether attendees are preparing for their first marathon or looking to run a smoother, more controlled race than previous attempts, the session is designed to translate months of physical training into a confident, executable race day strategy.
What to Expect
The one-hour, in-person session runs through the practical realities of race day from start to finish. Topics covered include how to build a realistic race day plan tailored to individual fitness and goals, and smart pacing strategies that help runners avoid going out too hard and blowing up in the second half of the race. The presenter will also cover how to manage effort levels and heart rate throughout the run, so participants can make informed decisions in the moment rather than relying on guesswork.
Beyond pacing, the session addresses the logistical side of race day that can catch runners off guard, including timing considerations, bathroom stop strategy, and general race morning logistics. Nutrition is also a key focus, with simple, practical guidance on fuelling before and during the race without overcomplicating things.
A highlight of the session is a detailed walkthrough of the Melbourne Marathon course itself, covering key sections, known challenges, and the specific points where runners typically lose composure or pacing discipline. Having this course knowledge in advance allows participants to mentally prepare for tough sections and stay calm when it matters most.
The event is held in person at Lifecare Malvern Sports Medicine in Malvern, VIC, and runs for one hour on the evening of Wednesday, September 2.
