The Outback Odyssey is a 15-day bike ride on the Mawson Trail from Adelaide to Blinman in the Flinders Ranges covering a distance of 900km. It is suitable for both MTB and gravel bikes, and although it is not exclusively for super-fit riders, it is still a challenging ride that requires training.
The ride is divided into four stages: Full Mawson 920km (Adelaide to Blinman, 16 days), Mini Mawson #1 280km (Adelaide to Burra, 5 days), Mini Mawson #2 270km (Burra to Melrose, 6 days), and Mini Mawson #3 370km (Melrose to Blinman, 7 days).
The expected route for the ride is as follows:
- Day 1. Adelaide to Lobethal 40km, 630m ascent and 270m descent (Full Mawson and Mini Mawson #1 starts)
- Day 2. Lobethal to Tanunda 73km, 640m ascent and 780m descent
- Day 3. Tanunda to Riverton 78km, 570m ascent and 570m descent
- Day 4. Riverton to Burra 87km, 840m ascent and 630m descent
- Day 5. Rest Day Burra (Mini Mawson #1 finishes and Mini Mawson #2 starts)
- Day 6. Burra to Hallett 85km, 860m ascent and 760m descent
- Day 7. Hallett to Spalding 46km, 250m ascent and 560m descent
- Day 8. Spalding to Laura 83km, 540m ascent and 580m descent
- Day 9. Laura to Melrose 57km, 570m ascent and 430m descent
- Day 10. Rest Day Melrose (Mini Mawson #2 ends and Mini Mawson #3 starts)
- Day 11. Melrose to Quorn 71km, 380m ascent and 470m descent
- Day 12. Quorn to Hawker 112km, 450m ascent and 430m descent
- Day 13. Hawker to Rawnsley Park 94km, 460m ascent and 330m descent
- Day 14. Rawnsley Park to Wilpena Pound 26km, 200m ascent and 110m descent
- Day 15. Wilpena Pound to Blinman 66km, 510m ascent and 440m descent (Full Mawson and Mini Mawson #3 finishes)
The Outback Odyssey is organised by BikeSA, a non-profit independent organization that promotes all types of cycling and focuses on improving riding conditions in South Australia.
