About this event
The Big Melbourne Kilt Run brings runners, joggers, walkers and families together for a tartan-filled lap of Melbourne’s iconic Tan Track on Sunday 14 March 2027. Kilts are optional—anything tartan goes—and the morning supports the Heart Foundation through participant fundraising.
A Tartan Lap of The Tan
The 3.827 km course starts and finishes at the Pillars of Wisdom in Kings Domain Gardens. Participants travel clockwise along Alexandra Avenue, climb Anderson Street and return to the gravel Tan Track beside Birdwood Avenue. The route passes the Royal Botanic Gardens and the Shrine of Remembrance before returning to the finish, with distance markers every 250 metres and course marshals helping participants stay on track.
Run, Jog or Walk
The event welcomes all fitness levels, from seasoned runners to walkers and family groups. People may enter individually or as a team. Entrants select one of four groups on arrival: expected finish times under 15 minutes, under 20 minutes, under 30 minutes, or the walkers and families group.
Timed participants wearing a race bib with a timing chip can download a certificate showing their result after the event. The first three placegetters in each category receive a Kilt Runner medal, while children’s participation certificates are also available. Registrations made after 23 February are not guaranteed a race bib with a timing chip.
Race Morning
Check-in, bag drop and race bib collection run from 8:30 am to 10:00 am. Group line-up takes place from 10:00 am, followed by the run start at 10:30 am. Bagpipes, Highland dancers and a start and finish arch add to the tartan atmosphere.
Water fountains, toilets and first aid are available near the course. There are no road closures for the event, so participants should remain alert around traffic when approaching or crossing Alexandra Avenue.
Entry and Heart Foundation Fundraising
Entries are paid, with current prices listed from $15 to $60. After registering, participants receive information about creating an optional fundraising page so family and friends can sponsor their effort. Funds raised through the challenge go directly to the Heart Foundation. Register using the official event link.
