Activity Details

The Melbourne Women's Walking Club, established in 1922 in Mount Waverley, VIC, was founded by a pioneering group of young women who were excluded from the men-only Melbourne Walking Club. As the first women’s bushwalking club in Australia, it has a proud legacy of promoting walking as a means to enjoy and appreciate the natural environment while fostering camaraderie and social connections among its members.

The Club organizes a diverse range of activities including day walks, backpacking, base camping, and accommodation trips. Members also have opportunities to participate in cycling, canoeing, and conservation projects. A comprehensive training program in bushwalking skills supports members at all experience levels, while regular social events strengthen community ties.

As a member club of Bushwalking Victoria, Melbourne Women's Walking Club shares the broader goal of inspiring people to explore natural areas for enjoyment, health, and wellbeing. Membership is affordable and welcoming, providing an excellent way to meet like-minded outdoor enthusiasts and improve fitness. Visitors are often invited to join activities on a trial basis before committing to membership.

About the provider

Bushwalking VIC

As Victoria’s peak body for bushwalking, we represent all bushwalkers and bushwalking clubs in the state. Now an incorporated organisation, our roots go back to 1934 when the Federation of Victorian Walking Clubs was established. In 2006, a major restructure modernised the organisation and we adopted our current name to better reflect our key area of interest.

We work to unite members of Victoria’s diverse walking community – bushwalking club members, people from organisations with similar interests and individuals.

Thinking of hiking/bushwalking groups?

Social hiking or bushwalking groups can be organized by a variety of organizations, including local parks and recreation departments, hiking clubs, and online communities.

The benefits of joining a social hiking group are numerous. For one, it can provide a sense of community and motivation, as you have the support and encouragement of others to help you stick to your hiking routine. Hiking groups can also be a great way to meet new people and make new friends, especially if you are new to an area or looking to expand your social circle.

In terms of structure, social hiking groups can vary. Some groups may have a designated leader who plans the route and sets the pace, while others may be more informal, with participants simply showing up and hiking together. Some groups may meet on a regular basis, such as once a week, while others may be more sporadic.
