Choosing The Right Exercise Partner

It's important to find a good exercise partner who understands your needs and is a good fit for you. Whether it's a friend, family member, or someone from the gym, your next workout buddy could be the key to reaching your fitness goals. Here are some things to consider when choosing someone who can motivate you and keep you accountable.

Know what you need

Before you start looking for someone to help with your fitness goals, it's important to think about what you need in a workout partner. It may be that you need someone who is more experienced than you are or someone who has similar fitness goals as you. It might also be that they need to be available at the same time as you. Whatever it is that you need, make sure that your exercise partner can provide it for you before committing.

Consider their needs

It's important to find someone who understands your needs and who is a good fit for you. For example, if you're trying to lose weight but your partner already has the body type that you want, that person may not be the best match for you. You'll need someone who wants to do what you want to do and is willing to commit to exercising with you.

Set rules and boundaries

One rule for a good workout partner is knowing what to expect from one another. Some people might be okay with being called out on late-night ice cream binges or skipping a workout on a lazy Sunday, but others may not. Before you start training together, come up with a list of rules and boundaries that will help keep both of you accountable.

For example, you can set guidelines like how often you'll train together and what your routine will look like. If your routine includes strength training three times a week and running four times a week, it's important to make sure they're also on the same page. You don't want one person who is only willing to spend 10 minutes at the gym and the other who wants to run for an hour every day before lifting weights.

Find someone you can trust

It's important to find a partner who you can trust. You need to be comfortable enough around them that you feel comfortable giving them your cell phone number and other personal information should the situation arise.

Don't compare yourself to others.

One of the worst mistakes you can make is comparing yourself to others. When choosing a workout partner, don't compare yourself to someone more physically fit. Choose someone who will push you and motivate you, not compete with you.
