The Coogee Island Challenge (Autumn) is an annual ocean swim at Coogee Beach that circles the iconic Wedding Cake Island and marks one of the last major swims on Sydney’s ocean swimming calendar. It brings together first-time ocean swimmers, experienced competitors and the local community for a final celebration of the season.
Hosted by Coogee Surf Life Saving Club, the event offers three swim distances to suit a range of abilities: an 800m Junior Dash, a 1km swim across the bay, and the signature 2.4km course around the island. The shorter swims are well suited to families, newcomers and swimmers building confidence, while the longer course provides a rewarding open-water challenge.
Participant safety is a major focus, with extensive support from qualified surf lifesavers, water safety crews, course officials and first aid teams throughout the event. The swim is also known for its strong community atmosphere, with beachside energy, open-water camaraderie and sweeping coastal views adding to the day.
