About this event
Expedition ACT is a ten-day outdoor adventure for people aged 15–24, combining hiking in the high country around Tharwa with ropes activities and an overnight solo experience. This session runs from 12 to 21 April 2027, starting and finishing at Outward Bound’s national campus.
Two hiking expeditions and a night of reflection
The indicative itinerary begins with the Giant Ladder and an introduction to camping. Participants learn to use topographic maps and a compass before heading out on their first hiking expedition. Group decisions about routes and campsites provide practical opportunities to work on communication and teamwork.
At the midpoint, the itinerary includes the rock formations of Lego Land and abseiling overlooking Orroral Valley. A values journey leads into an individual overnight campsite with food, shelter and time for reflection. The group then reunites for a second three-day hike, followed by high ropes and a shared outdoor dinner.
Environmental service and a closing ceremony round out the experience. The itinerary and route are indicative and may change.
Video application and program cost
The advertised fee is A$1,997, with funding assistance available. Applicants submit a one-to-two-minute video explaining why they want to attend. The organiser aims to respond within two weeks and sends successful applicants a booking link and preparation information.
Camping and preparation
Participants camp during the journey, help prepare group meals and carry their gear. Hiking boots are recommended, and a rain jacket is essential. Follow the organiser’s packing list and disclose dietary or medical needs through the pre-program forms. Arrival is at 10:30am on the first day; the final-day ceremony is at 1:30pm and the program concludes at 2pm. Canberra transport can be arranged through the organiser’s transport form.
