About this event
School leaders in Years 10–12 can apply for a fully funded five-day leadership program at Outward Bound’s Tharwa campus. Each program offers 18 places for students already taking responsibility at school, in a sports team or in a community organisation.
Leadership through outdoor challenges
Abseiling, the Giant Ladder, team problem-solving and raft building on the Murrumbidgee River create opportunities to practise communication and decision-making. Facilitated reflection helps participants examine their leadership approach and apply what they learn to the next challenge.
The indicative itinerary includes an environmental service activity, a values journey and an overnight campout. The first three nights are in shared cabin accommodation; the final night is spent camping. A closing certificate ceremony and celebratory lunch complete the program. Activities and the route may change.
Apply for a funded place
Successful applicants attend free of charge. Students complete their own application, explain their leadership experience and nominate a teacher or community leader as a referee. The referee must not be a family member. Shortlisted applicants are assessed before successful students receive a booking link.
Applications for this January 2027 session close on 22 November 2026.
Arriving and preparing
Participants arrive at the campus at 10:30am on the first day. The program finishes at 2pm on the final day, with families invited to the 1:30pm certificate ceremony. Organiser-arranged Canberra transport requires advance confirmation. Bring the clothing and equipment specified in the seasonal packing list, including enclosed footwear and a rain jacket. Participants should be able to manage basic daily tasks in a group setting.
