About this event
The High Country Flyathlon returns to the Delatite River at Mirimbah on Saturday, 5 December 2026, combining trail running, fly fishing and friendly competition at the foot of Mt Buller.
Competitors will tackle a 14-kilometre undulating single-track course through lush montane forest while carrying their fly-fishing gear. During the race, each participant must attempt to catch, photograph and release a fish from the Delatite River. Catch size and species can earn time bonuses, adding a strategic fishing challenge to the run.
The course includes two river checkpoints, with competitors able to choose whether to run upstream or downstream first. A double-species bonus is available for catching both rainbow and brown trout. Prizes also recognise the biggest and smallest fish, so success is not determined by running speed alone.
Fish must be handled carefully and released after being recorded. Participants should bring suitable running and fishing equipment, a valid fishing licence and a snake bandage; required equipment is checked at registration. Fly-fishing guidance is available along the course for competitors who are new to the sport.
The event runs from 8.30am to 5pm, with an entry fee of $150. A meal and locally crafted beer are included after the race, providing an opportunity to relax and share stories with fellow competitors.
Run on a not-for-profit basis, the event raises funds for river conservation projects through OzFish.
