About this event
Set against the Coral Sea, Magnetic Island and Townsville’s striking Castle Hill, the McDonald’s Townsville Running Festival offers a memorable running experience in one of Queensland’s most scenic regional destinations.
Hosted in North Ward, the festival brings runners and supporters to Jezzine Barracks for a professionally delivered event with a welcoming community atmosphere. Its fast, flat, certified courses follow Townsville’s coastline and provide views across the sea, The Strand and towards Magnetic Island.
Race options cater for a wide range of abilities and ages, including the marathon, half marathon, 10km, 5km events, marathon relay and a shorter Hero Run. Junior and family-friendly events help create an inclusive festival atmosphere, while the longer distances attract experienced runners and participants chasing a challenging, scenic course.
The event traces its origins to the Townsville Marathon Club, established by local running enthusiasts in 1972. The club later became Townsville Road Runners, and in 1999 it expanded the event into one of Australia’s early running festivals. It has since grown into one of Queensland’s largest regional marathon events.
Whether the goal is to test a marathon personal best, enjoy a coastal half marathon, take part in a community fun run or encourage the next generation of runners, the festival combines competitive racing with the distinctive atmosphere of Townsville. Participants can expect an engaging course, spectacular north Queensland scenery and an event experience that extends well beyond the finish line.
