About this event
The Portsea Swim Classic is one of Victoria’s most iconic open-water swimming events, with a history dating back to 1987. Held in the sheltered waters of Port Phillip Bay, the event offers swimmers a memorable way to experience the Mornington Peninsula coastline and the historic surrounds of Point Nepean.
- Portsea Classic: A 1.5km point-to-point swim starting near Portsea Pier in Weeroona Bay. The course follows the shoreline around Police Point and alongside Point Nepean National Park before finishing at Jarman Oval, also known as the Polo Ground, within the historic Quarantine Station.
- Portsea Gold: A 2.5km long-course swim for experienced swimmers seeking an additional challenge. The course starts east of the Portsea Hotel and is limited to 300 entrants.
- Additional swim: A 500m course is also listed for the event, running with the tide through the sheltered waters of the Quarantine Station and finishing at the event’s well-known finish area.
The courses combine relatively protected bay conditions with scenic views of coastal bushland, dunes and national park. The distinctive finish at the Quarantine Station adds a strong sense of place to an event that has grown from a small swim around Portsea Pier into a major annual community occasion.
The 2027 Portsea Swim Classic will be held on Saturday, 16 January in Portsea, Victoria.
