About this event
The South Maroubra Ocean Swim is a popular autumn ocean swim at South Maroubra Beach, bringing the Sydney ocean-swimming season to a lively close. As part of the Triple Crown Ocean Swim Series, it offers three courses to suit different levels of experience: a short and sharp 500m swim, a cruisy 1km course and a longer 2.5km course extending along the scenic Malabar Headland.
The 500m event is designed for younger swimmers, with entries available from age nine. The 1km and 2.5km swims are open to swimmers aged 12 and over, offering a choice between a manageable bay swim and a more demanding long-course challenge. The open-water courses combine a broad coastal setting with the natural movement of the ocean, creating an enjoyable challenge for both developing and experienced swimmers.
Fast swimmers can compete for cash prizes in each distance. Awards include $1,000 for the 2.5km winners, $250 for the 1km winners and $50 for the 500m winners, with the 500m prize restricted to eligible swimmers aged 8–14. The event also contributes to the Triple Crown opportunity, where completing two eligible swims can place participants in the running for additional cash prizes, subject to the series terms and conditions.
Event activities are scheduled throughout the morning, beginning with a competitor briefing before the 500m swim, followed by the 1km and 2.5km starts. Presentations are scheduled around midday. With a choice of distances, a scenic Sydney coastline and a competitive edge for top performers, the South Maroubra Ocean Swim is a fitting finale to the season.
