About this event
Sugar Cane Cut is a high-energy elimination race combining the format of a backyard ultra with the challenge of a beep test. It takes place on a smooth, fast 1.6-kilometre paved loop through Queens Park in East Mackay, with the race beginning at 7:00 am on Sunday, 21 March 2027.
Runners start each lap together, with places limited to 150 participants. The opening lap allows 15 minutes to complete the course, providing a relatively relaxed start before the pressure builds. After each successful lap, the available time decreases by 15 seconds, demanding increasingly faster running and careful race strategy.
Competitors must cross the finish line before the time limit expires to earn their rest period and return to the next mass start. Any runner who fails to finish within the allotted time is eliminated. The official result is determined by the total number of complete laps completed before being cut.
Designed for runners who enjoy endurance challenges, progressive pacing and head-to-head competition, Sugar Cane Cut rewards consistency, speed and the ability to manage effort as the clock continues to tighten. The event also supports Motor Neurone Disease Queensland, with a portion of every entry contributing to the organisation.
