About this event
The Rip Swim is a challenging open-water crossing from Point Nepean to Point Lonsdale, through the entrance to Port Phillip Bay. The swim begins in deep water, where participants enter from a boat, and finishes at Point Lonsdale’s front beach near the shops.
Often described as one of Australia’s most demanding swims, The Rip is a tidal passage known for rough conditions and powerful water movement. The crossing covers approximately 3.5–4 kilometres, although the route has no fixed markers and conditions can affect the distance and difficulty.
For the 2027 summer crossing, places are limited to 30 swimmers. Participants must complete a qualifying swim and secure their place with a non-refundable deposit. The full entry fee includes qualifying swim dates, boat transfers, safety support, event merchandise, high safety ratios, a dedicated kayaker for groups of three to six swimmers and backup dates.
Swimmers should be physically and mentally prepared for a demanding swim in rough seas. Summer water temperatures are expected to be approximately 17–18°C, and wetsuits are permitted for this crossing. The event is scheduled around suitable tidal conditions, as strong currents can make The Rip unsafe to swim.
The swim is operated in close coordination with maritime authorities, with shipping movements managed to support the crossing. Participants travel from Queenscliff Harbour by boat to the start area near Point Nepean before swimming across to Point Lonsdale.
