About this event
The Copperlode Cup, held on Sunday, August 16, 2026, is an iconic annual road race organized by the Cairns Road Runners, celebrating over 30 years of tradition.
Runners begin at the base of Lake Morris Road and ascend 15 kilometres through shady tropical rainforest, finishing at the picnic area overlooking scenic Lake Morris, which is held back by the Copperlode Dam in the Cairns highlands.
This one-way event is challenging yet rewarding, featuring a consistent uphill grade on cleared pavement with stunning vistas of tropical North Queensland.
In 2026, the event includes a relay option, with the changeover point at the water spot Waddlebla after approximately 7 kilometres.
Registration begins at 6:15 am for a 7:00 am race start, and participants will enjoy a sweet celebration treat (a CUPcake) and fruit at the finish line.
While there is no organized return transport, runners can choose to run back down the 15-kilometre route, take the trail to Crystal Cascades for a pickup, or join a spectator or volunteer vehicle for the descent.
