Junior Adventure introduces young people aged 12–15 to outdoor camping, hiking and teamwork in the high country around Tharwa. This five-day session runs from 12 April–16 April 2027, with Outward Bound group leaders guiding participants through ropes activities, navigation and an overnight hiking expedition.
Learn the skills for an overnight journey
The indicative program starts with group introductions, equipment checks and the Giant Ladder. Participants learn to set up camp and prepare a group meal. High ropes, environmental service along the Murrumbidgee River and introductory hiking lessons follow.
The middle two days are devoted to an overnight hike. Young people practise reading a topographic map and using a compass, then work with their group leaders to choose routes and reach their campsites. Abseiling, a final reflection and a celebratory lunch complete the program. Activities and routes may change.
A Bronze Award option
The program is suitable for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze Adventurous Journey, particularly for participants new to overnight hiking and camping. Award participants must obtain their Award Leader’s approval before enrolling. Food and major equipment are included, allowing beginners to try this form of outdoor activity without already owning all their hiking gear.
Cost and preparation
The advertised fee is A$1,051.83, with funding assistance available. Book through the contact options and follow the organiser’s packing list. Participants should be able to cook, pack a bag and follow instructions in a group setting. Enclosed hiking footwear and a rain jacket are important; check the seasonal clothing requirements before travelling.
The program starts at 10:30am at Tharwa campus and concludes at 2pm on the last day. Families are invited to the 1:30pm certificate ceremony. Canberra transport options require advance confirmation using the pre-program transport form.
