About this event
The Newcastle Harbour Swim is a signature open-water community event held in Stockton on Australia Day. Organised by Stockton Surf Life Saving Club, it offers swimmers the opportunity to cross Newcastle Harbour in a rare, officially managed harbour swim.
Participants can choose between a one-way 700-metre swim or a 1.4-kilometre return course, completing the crossing and swimming back. The event welcomes swimmers across a broad age range and attracts participants from the local area and interstate.
With shipping movements paused for the crossing, the swim provides a unique perspective on Newcastle’s working harbour and coastal lifestyle. Its history is linked to local Stockton residents who, in earlier decades, are said to have swum home after missing the last ferry.
Funds raised support Stockton Surf Life Saving Club’s lifesaving equipment and education programs, helping strengthen water safety and community resilience. Entries are limited, so early registration is recommended.
