About this event
The Big Swim is a long-running ocean swim from Palm Beach to Whale Beach, held on the last Sunday in January and first staged in 1974. It is described as one of New South Wales’ longest continuously running ocean swims and a true point-to-point journey swim around the headland through the Tasman Sea.
The main event covers approximately 2.5 to 2.8 kilometres, depending on conditions and course setup, and is known for its scenic but challenging route. Swimmers can expect open-water conditions that may include swell, current, rocky headlands and changing summer seas.
A shorter Little Big Swim is also held for newer ocean swimmers and younger participants. This introductory swim is around 1 kilometre and takes place at Palm Beach.
The Big Swim has a strong community feel and a long history of summer participation, bringing together ocean swimmers, surf club members and spectators for a classic Northern Beaches event. Finishing at Whale Beach adds to the appeal, with a festive atmosphere and a well-earned post-swim buzz.
