About this event
The Doctor is a 27-kilometre downwind ocean paddling event from Rottnest Island to Sorrento Beach, across open water off the Western Australian coast.
Competitors launch from Rottnest Island and travel towards the mainland, riding wind-driven ocean swells and surfable runs created by the south-west sea breeze known as the Fremantle Doctor. The course finishes at Sorrento Beach, where paddlers leave their craft and make the final run up the sand to the finish line.
The event is recognised as a major ocean paddling challenge, testing participants’ endurance, balance and ability to link moving downwind runs over a long open-water crossing. Conditions can vary with the strength of the prevailing breeze and ocean swell.
The 2026 event is scheduled for Saturday, 28 November at Rottnest Island, Western Australia.
