About this event
The Sharkskin Caves Beach Ocean Swim combines a scenic coastal challenge with a fun junior event at Caves Beach, south of Newcastle in the Lake Macquarie region.
The feature event is a 1.5km point-to-point swim from Spoon Rocks to Caves Beach. Swimmers assemble at the local surf club before travelling to the starting area, where a breakwall provides some protection from prevailing swell. The course follows the reef towards Caves Beach, creating a journey-style swim rather than a simple beach loop, with changing coastal conditions and striking views along the way.
A 500m junior swim is held close to shore in front of the surf club. Designed for swimmers aged 9 to 11, the loop course follows clearly marked buoys and is supported by water-safety personnel, making it a suitable introduction to ocean swimming for younger participants.
The event program may also include the 400m Daffodil Dip Swim, providing another shorter-distance option. The minimum entry age is 12 for the 1.5km swim and 9 for the 500m and 400m events. Participants under 18 require parental consent.
With its distinctive point-to-point course, protected start area and family-friendly junior distances, this coastal swimming event offers an engaging way to experience the waters around Caves Beach.
