Frequently Asked Questions
What kinds of routes do Perth walking groups use?
Perth walking groups commonly use Kings Park and Botanic Garden (elevated, shaded, views over the Swan River), the flat foreshore paths beside the Swan River itself, coastal routes along Cottesloe and Scarborough, or suburban reserves. Browse walking groups in Perth and ask whether a walk is shaded, exposed, flat, or hilly — Perth summers get hot with little shade on coastal paths, so an early start matters more than the distance.
What's the difference between a social group and lessons/coaching?
A social group usually focuses on regular, informal participation and meeting people, with less individual instruction. Lessons and coaching are led by an instructor and follow a more structured approach to developing skills, technique or fitness. Some activities combine both, so check whether a listing is social, coached or a mix before joining.
How do I find the right activity for my skill level?
Start with the age and activity filters, then check the listing for terms such as beginner, social, intermediate, advanced or all abilities. Look for the expected pace, distance, rules and equipment as well as the skill label. If anything is unclear, tell the organiser about your experience and ask what a typical first session involves.
Are activities free or do they cost money?
KeepActive lists both free and paid activities. Use the 'Show Free Activities Only' filter for no-cost options. Paid activities may charge per session, by term, through a membership or for venue hire, so check what the advertised price includes and ask about trial sessions, equipment hire and additional registration fees.
How do I join a group or sign up for lessons?
Click on the group listing to find their contact details, then reach out directly via their website or phone number. KeepActive helps you discover activities, but the organiser handles bookings and registration.
Do I need to commit to a group long-term?
Not always. Some social activities welcome casual drop-ins, while leagues, term-based lessons and coached programs may require registration for a season or set number of sessions. Check the cancellation policy, attendance expectations and payment terms with the organiser before committing.
Why should I join a social group instead of exercising alone?
Group activity can add routine, encouragement and accountability while giving you a regular way to meet people with a shared interest. It is not automatically better than exercising alone, but many people find the social commitment helps them stay consistent. Read more about group versus solo exercise and making friends through shared activities.
What activities are available for kids and seniors?
Most sports have age-specific options—kids classes, teens programs, adult groups, and seniors activities. For Kids: Our guide covers what works best to get kids active. For Seniors (65+): Group activities combine fitness with important community connection. Use the age filters to find what's available near you.
How do I start my own group or coaching business?
Follow our step-by-step guide to starting a successful group. KeepActive offers free listings for community groups and paid options for coaches and trainers. Check our pricing page or contact us to learn about getting your activity listed.
