Frequently Asked Questions
How do I train for my first 5K?
For a first-time 5K, most people benefit from 4-6 weeks of training. This is general guidance; consult a coach or medical professional for personalized advice. A basic plan: run 3 times a week, gradually increasing distance. Week 1: 2km runs. Week 2-3: 2.5-3km. Week 4-5: 3-4km. Week 6: taper and race. Mix easy runs with one slightly faster-paced run per week. Rest days are crucial for recovery.
What's a realistic pace for a 5K?
5K paces vary widely by fitness level. These are general benchmarks. Beginners: 7-9 minutes per km. Intermediate: 5-7 min/km. Advanced: 4-5 min/km. Don't worry about pace for your first 5K—focus on finishing. Many events are non-competitive and celebrate participation. You can walk, jog, or run—it's your race.
How many weeks should I train for a 5K?
This is general guidance. If you're already running regularly, 3-4 weeks of focused training may be enough. If new to running, allow 6-8 weeks to build a safe base. The key is consistency—regular short runs build fitness better than occasional long efforts. Listen to your body and adjust based on how you feel.
How do I get to Geelong events by public transport?
Geelong has train and bus services connecting to Melbourne and local areas. Trains from Melbourne reach Geelong in about an hour. Check PTV Journey Planner for details. Many Geelong events are in accessible central locations. Check your event details for parking and public transport information.
What's special about Geelong as an event destination?
Geelong is a major regional hub with strong event culture. It's close to Melbourne (train access), has coastal venues, and hosts significant events. Autumn (March-May) and spring are ideal—mild conditions. Summer is warm, winter cool. Geelong events attract both locals and Melbourne-based runners. The city has excellent waterfront precincts for events. It's less crowded than Melbourne but well-organized.
Do I have to run the exact distance listed in the event?
Each event sets its own rules. Some allow you to run, walk, or jog the distance. Others accept modified distances or allow you to split the activity across multiple days. Check the event details for specific requirements.
Can I join a running challenge if I cannot attend an event in person?
Yes. Virtual running challenges let you complete a set distance or cumulative goal on your own route and schedule. Check each listing for its participation dates, tracking requirements, and whether the distance must be completed in one session.
How does fundraising work in charity events?
Charity events typically ask participants to secure sponsorships (donations) from friends and family based on their participation or performance. You register, then share a fundraising link with your network. Funds go directly to the charity.
Do I have to fundraise to participate in a charity event?
Requirements vary by event. Some events ask participants to set a fundraising target, while others allow you to participate with just a registration fee. Check the event details to see what's expected.
How do I search for events in my area?
Use the search filters on this page to find events by sport type (running, cycling, walking), location (search by suburb or postcode), and date (this weekend, this month, or a custom range). Virtual events can be found by checking the Virtual & Online filter.
Is there a cost to register for events?
Most events have registration fees ranging from free to a few dollars. Some events offer free early-bird registration or family discounts. The registration cost is shown on each event's listing.
Will the event be cancelled if the weather is bad?
Physical events may be postponed or modified due to severe weather, but this is rare. Check your event's terms and conditions or contact the organisers directly for their weather policy. Most virtual events proceed regardless of weather since participants choose their own locations.
