Princes Park - Come & Try Orienteering
Contact Details
Description
Welcome to Melbourne Forest Racers' 2023 series of introductory training sessions! Over two consecutive Saturday mornings, we'll be meeting at Princes Park to offer coaching and training courses in the park and surrounding streets. Perfect for familes, runners and anyone looking to learn orienteering skills in a friendly, safe environment!
New to orienteering?
It's a trail run (and often an off-trail run!) with a difference - an orienteering race doesn't follow a set route. Instead, you have to visit a series of checkpoints and register each one with an electronic timing chip (we’ll lend one to you on the day). The checkpoints are marked by flags on the ground and may be along paths, fences, buildings or garden beds. The challenge is to race between each one, choosing your own route between the checkpoints, using a special detailed colour orienteering map (which you get to keep too).
Sprint races are the shortest format of orienteering (between 2-4km) and are held in complex urban environments like university or school campuses. More info on what to expect at your first sprint event is available here:
https://www.vicorienteering.asn.au/go-orienteering/sprint-orienteering/
Two courses will be on offer each week - a standard 'line' course
(approx. 3km) designed for newcomers and a training exercise
(approx. 3-4km) aimed at more experienced orienteers (but please
note that this will still be a relatively simple exercise, for
more high level racing - please come along to our MFR Sprints
event on Sunday 5 March).
Start times: Start anytime from 8:30am - 10:00am, courses close at 10:45am.
Entry fees: NEWCOMERS AND JUNIORS RUN FOR FREE, existing orienteers - $5.
Assembly area is the northeast side of Ikon Park Stadium, near the roundabout at the junction of Bowen Crescent and Garton Street.
This event takes place on the land of the Wurundjeri People and MFR wishes to acknowledge them as Traditional Owners. We pay our respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging.
