Frequently Asked Questions
What's the best age for kids to start running in family events?
Most family events welcome kids ages 4-5 and up, with shorter distances for younger children. At ages 4-6, keep it fun and short (1-2km). Ages 7-10 can handle 3-5km. Teens can do adult distances. The key is making it enjoyable—focus on participation, not pace. Many events have staggered starts for different age groups.
How do I encourage my child to participate in events?
Make it fun: go for the party atmosphere, not the competition. Let them choose their own pace. Train together on short, enjoyable runs. Celebrate small wins during training. Find events with kids' activities or entertainment. Don't pressure them to 'race'—let them see other kids having fun. Many kids who hesitate initially become enthusiastic after one good event experience.
How do I get to Geelong events by public transport?
Geelong has train and bus services connecting to Melbourne and local areas. Trains from Melbourne reach Geelong in about an hour. Check PTV Journey Planner for details. Many Geelong events are in accessible central locations. Check your event details for parking and public transport information.
What's special about Geelong as an event destination?
Geelong is a major regional hub with strong event culture. It's close to Melbourne (train access), has coastal venues, and hosts significant events. Autumn (March-May) and spring are ideal—mild conditions. Summer is warm, winter cool. Geelong events attract both locals and Melbourne-based runners. The city has excellent waterfront precincts for events. It's less crowded than Melbourne but well-organized.
Can my family participate in a walking event together?
Yes. Many walking events are designed for families and welcome participants of all ages and fitness levels. Check the event details to see if there are distance options, age groups, or family categories.
What age should children be to participate in a fun run?
Most fun runs welcome families with children of all ages. Many events offer different distance options for kids (such as 1 km), families, and serious runners. Check the event details to see what's available and any age recommendations.
Can we register as a family team?
Many family fun runs allow team registration, but it varies by event. Some events let families register together as a group, while others require individual registrations. Check the event's registration page for team or family options.
How does fundraising work in charity events?
Charity events typically ask participants to secure sponsorships (donations) from friends and family based on their participation or performance. You register, then share a fundraising link with your network. Funds go directly to the charity.
Do I have to fundraise to participate in a charity event?
Requirements vary by event. Some events ask participants to set a fundraising target, while others allow you to participate with just a registration fee. Check the event details to see what's expected.
How do I search for events in my area?
Use the search filters on this page to find events by sport type (running, cycling, walking), location (search by suburb or postcode), and date (this weekend, this month, or a custom range). Virtual events can be found by checking the Virtual & Online filter.
Is there a cost to register for events?
Most events have registration fees ranging from free to a few dollars. Some events offer free early-bird registration or family discounts. The registration cost is shown on each event's listing.
Will the event be cancelled if the weather is bad?
Physical events may be postponed or modified due to severe weather, but this is rare. Check your event's terms and conditions or contact the organisers directly for their weather policy. Most virtual events proceed regardless of weather since participants choose their own locations.
